Epiwalk Rejuvenation: Refurbishment of Epiwalk Lifestyle Center
June 11, 2024
This project attempts to ‘revive’ the spirit of Epiwalk Mall, located in one of the most expensive mixed-use complexes in Jakarta, by transforming the transitional space between the main building and the site. The concept seeks to complement the existing riverside area—a popular jogging route—by establishing a visual ‘biophilic’ connection via a floating garden built from an existing canopy.
PLATE-SHAPED GARDEN
Central to the design approach is to change the canopy into a floating garden that enhances social interaction and public engagement. The main concept arose from tampah, a traditional winnowing tray, to symbolise Indonesian culture that celebrates gathering together as a community. The plate-shaped garden is positioned vertically against the revamped façade to be overlaid with greenery in place of the previous all-glass interface.
Containing natural plants and water elements, it brings greenery up from the public grounds, ‘hovering’ above to give a different visual perspective to the surroundings, while extending the green view towards the riverfront. In the larger context, the project embraces a diverse range of landscaping practices, including integrating multiple existing water features into cascading ponds for cooling and irrigation. This integration of functionality with aesthetics not only nourishes the landscape, but also promotes vibrant green spaces and biodiversity.
The main strategy that focuses on creating biophilic spaces, with access to daylight, natural views and opportunities for physical activities to promote occupant health and well-being, does so by optimising current resources.
The design team maintains the possibility of using existing features such as planters to be revitalised into green ‘sanctuaries’ to enhance the urban public landscape. The other resources come from water management and waste recycling systems that are presently in place. A portion of the materials is sourced from nearby suppliers to minimise transportation emissions and to support the local economy.
