Covering A Super Roof

In 2013, SMG New Orleans initiated the recoating project of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans: Kymax coating (a thin-build elastomeric coating) was selected for its properties to resist the build-up of dirt and bacteria growth, retain its reflective value and colour, and offer protection against severe weather conditions in New Orleans’ hot and humid environment in a downtown urban location. This also has an added benefit of energy and cost savings with the elimination of the need for washing.

Kymax is based on Kynar Aquatec latex: a water-based polyvinylidene fluoride fluoropolymer technology developed by Arkema Inc. The coatings based on this latex are cured at ambient temperatures, which means that they can be applied to a variety of substrates, including metal, PVC, SPF, concrete, and as a finishing coat over acrylic base coats.

Kymax coatings provide an easy application that saves time and costs. The Mercedes-Benz logo and the lettering were hand-painted with a specialised coating that contains infrared reflective pigments, which helps reduce blistering by lowering the surface temperature by 30 percent or more.

Quest Construction Products issued a 20-year complete roof system warranty for not just the coating itself, but also for the foam membrane underneath.
