Landscapes for disaster resilience: International Landscape Architecture Student Workshop (ILASW) 2024

BOGOR, 23 SEPTEMBER 2024 – [MEDIA PARTNER] In the disaster-prone geography of Indonesia, how can landscape architecture help communities become more resilient? This was the key topic behind International Landscape Architecture Student Workshop (ILASW) 2024, a six-day international workshop and seminar organized by the Landscape Architecture Student Association (Himaskap) of IPB University that ran from 9–14 September 2024. The workshop took place in Malasari Village, Nanggung District, Bogor, hosting 24 participants from four different countries along with prominent landscape architecture experts as speakers and mentors.

The event’s tagline Nature Calls, Community Harmonized reflected the core theme of ILASW 2024, which was Harmony in Hazards: Embracing Communities within Sustainable and Resilient Landscapes. Participants were encouraged to develop critical thinking skills while working on real-world case studies in Malasari Village, with the aim of generating landscape solutions that contribute to creating safer, more sustainable environments.

On the opening day, public lectures were delivered by Ir. Umar Zain, IALI; Prof Wei-Bin Ben Chen; Prof Nappy L. Navarra, D.Eng; and Dr Beata Joanna Gawryszewska, PhD, DSc, taking place at the Toyib Hadiwijaya Auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. The following day, participants visited Malasari Village to conduct field surveys and gain in-depth understanding from the local community, including living in harmony with Nature and facing environmental challenges such as natural disasters. In addition, participants studied the village’s landscape structure, including its topography, water management and vegetation to develop resilient and sustainable design solutions. This experience not only provided technical insights but also reinforced the importance of a participatory approach in landscape planning.

The workshop sessions took place over two days, led by unit masters Prof Dr Syartinilia, S.P., M.Si; Prof Nappy L. Navarra, D.Eng; and Ian Pranita, S.P., M.L.A (SCGC), IALI, along with mentors Luthfi Nur Ilman, S.Arsl; Nona Sugiharti, ST., M.Si; Hapsah Faridah, S.Arsl; and Ahsan Wildan, S.Arsl. Participants were divided into groups and tasked with developing planning concepts for Malasari Village. Each group was required to incorporate resilience in their landscape designs, focusing on disaster mitigation and utilising local potentials. The workshop process involved intensive discussions and feedback sessions with the unit masters and mentors, resulting in ideas that ranged from village spatial management to implementable ecological solutions.

The workshop results were showcased in an exhibition, award ceremony for the best proposal and cultural night that concluded the event. As media partner, FuturArc magazines and digital subscriptions were bestowed to the participants and speakers.
