FuturArc Prize (FAP) 2024: Winning Ideas for Ecosystem Rejuvenation Awarded in Indonesia

JAKARTA, 25 SEPTEMBER 2024 – In the final round of awarding for this cycle, the First Place champion, Third Place and Merit awarded teams from Indonesia received their prizes on Thursday, 19 September 2024 at the Ritz-Carlton Pacific Place as part of BCI Asia Awards. “I am proud to announce that Indonesia is the country with the highest number of participants in 2024,” said Dinda Mundakir, Senior Content Editor of FuturArc in the preceding speech.

This year’s competition asked entrants to propose architectural solutions within Asia for the continuation of life after either Climate Destruction and/or Endings scenarios, and the three awarded teams envisioned ecosystem rejuvenation for various Indonesian sites.

The First Place entry by Arkansyah Farras Setiawan, titled Ouroboros: Gamification to Transform a Tangerang ‘Trash-scape’ is set in the Rawa Kucing landfill in Tangerang, where the majority of trash is still being openly dumped. The site was ablaze for nearly two weeks in October 2023, and will continue to pose high-risk fire hazards during the dry seasons if no further measures are taken. Arkansyah’s winning proposal includes a holistic ‘cradle-to-cradle’ approach that aimed to change users’ behaviours relating to trash. He was presented with the trophy, certificate, cash prize of SGD8,000 and 2-year subscription to FuturArc digital magazine via FuturArc app.

The Third Place entry by Kamil Muhammad, Raushan Fikri, Gerald Alexander Djuneidy and Novita Anggraini, titled The Spatialization of Salt, is a scalable intervention aimed to distill freshwater while harvesting salt at the same time. It is set in Bekasi’s Muaragembong Estuary, where decades of anthropogenic landscape alterations have led to intensive salinisation and a freshwater crisis. The proposal introduces structures for the benefit of humans, mangroves and animals alike, including the endemic Javan langur that has been venturing into residential areas in search of freshwater. The team received their trophy, certificates, cash prize of SGD2,000 and 1-year subscription to FuturArc digital magazine via FuturArc app.

The Merit entry by fresh graduates Abraham Chintianto, Kenzy Arandha Irdham, Tasyarin Hasnaa Prisidiyani, Andianto Mahdi Prasasya and Adika Ramaghazy is titled Mangrupuncture: A Tale of Coastal Remediation. The proposal offers a village-scale network of architectural interventions for ecosystem remediation in Timbulsloko Village, which is currently inundated due to mangrove logging, changes in productive ponds, climate crisis and the construction of a nearby seaport. The team received certificates, cash prize of SGD500 and 1-year subscription to FuturArc digital magazine via FuturArc app.

Representing the jurors, Farizan d’Avezac de Moran commended the awardees as well as other participants from Indonesia: “The courage that you show in your submissions, as well as defending your ideas and creativity is insurmountable. With ever-pressing environmental problems, which leads to the demand for sustainability in design, designers are pushed to the limits in how we consider resources and spaces … At times, you may feel that people do not understand your rationale or your vision but do not be disappointed; you are a step closer to a better design.”
