Calls for submissions to reclaim the value from plastic waste: The Alliance to End Plastic Waste
CAPTURING THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF PLASTIC WASTE
The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (the Alliance), an international non-profit organisation, today announced on 8 March 2021 the request for proposals for projects that capture the economic value of plastic waste.
As part of the Alliance’s mission, it aims to identify, accelerate and scale solutions to help end plastic waste in the environment.
This represents value that can be reclaimed through recycling, which in turn, can contribute to increasing collection and preventing plastic waste from leaking into the environment.
Although technologies exist for sorting, cleaning and recycling of many plastic fractions, a lack of confidence in market demand is constraining investment. Variable and low-quality supply as well as limited transparency and standardisation are issues that are hindering the progress of scaling recycling solutions.
Hence, this request for proposal is seeking large, scalable, mechanical process-based solutions that will uplift value from plastic waste. This will in turn create new market demand and improve the quality for recycled plastic, thereby enabling widespread adoption.
SUBMISSIONS
Submissions must demonstrate large and scalable impact that will help create new market demand and improve the quality for recycled plastic. As the need for action is urgent, proposals that can reach full-scale operational capacity within three years or less will be prioritised.
The submission calls for impactful and scalable solutions that generate value and move us up the waste hierarchy, helping the world to achieve a future free of plastic waste. This can be achieved via the collection and containment of waste, to packaging designs that increase opportunities for circularity as well as community action and educational programmes, etc.
Proposals can be submitted by public or private entities, for-profit or not-for-profit organisations.
The application period runs till 31 July 2021.
