World Architecture Festival 2024 Shortlist Reveals Most Innovative Projects From Across the Globe

September 4, 2024

On 8 July 2024, the shortlisted projects for the 2024 World Architecture Festival (WAF) were announced ahead of the live event that will take place from 6–8 November 2024 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. WAF represents the world’s biggest live-judged architectural awards programme, where all finalists will present their projects to a panel of judges at the international festival.

The shortlist features new completed buildings and landscapes as well as future architectural concepts across 33 categories, including residential, transport, energy and retrofit. This year’s finalists include many emerging practices alongside some of the biggest names in architecture from over 70 countries, with the top five shortlisted countries being China, Australia, United Kingdom, India and Singapore.

More than 30 awards in the WAFX section will also recognise future projects addressing the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues, including health, climate change, technology, ethics and values.

These include a project that explores restoring Gaza’s landscapes along with their agricultural and cultural heritage; a public park in Iran that imagines a future with no restriction to civil freedoms; and the transformation of a disused gas tower in Münster into a sustainable residential tower.

The international judging panel for this year’s awards consists of 175 industry experts across 32 countries, featuring industry leaders such as: Charu Kokate, Senior Partner/Director of Safdie Architects; Mario Cucinella, Architect, Founder and Creative Director of Mario Cucinella Architects; Sanjay Puri, Principal Architect of Sanjay Puri Architects; and Sonali Rastogi, Founding Partner of Morphogenesis.

In addition to the live-judged awards programme and crit presentations, this year’s event will include a live events programme and keynote talks from an international panel of speakers around the theme of Tomorrow. This thematic conference will review the directions where architecture is heading in relation to 21st century conditions.
