CHAPEL OF THE APOSTLES by Candice Lim
The brief was to design a compact Catholic spiritual recreational facility, consisting of a historical and educational area (to provide the complete story, history and information on the famous figures of the Catholic Church), a main chapel, and a separate dormitory that could be rented out occasionally.
On a bigger scale, the owner's idea was to create a religious recreational facility catering to five different faiths, in a 40-hectare area, that offers respite from the bustle of Jakarta—not only to enjoy the beauty of nature, but also to provide a therapeutic and healing facility for the soul.
An area of 9 hectares filled with hills and valleys was given to the Catholic Church, the chapel itself occupying a hilly part of the site. Designed in a sequential flow, starting from the drop-off area, ramping up to the museum and the open platform, and then the chapel, it fits into the 50-degree sloped area, using the slope as a main part of the concept. The sequences will bring each person to experience the steps of knowing, learning, enjoying and then deep reflection upon reaching the chapel. The view to the valley can be enjoyed from the open platform and the rooftop of the chapel as the 'pinnacle' of the sequences, giving each person an inspiring experience.
