FuturArc Forum 2008 arrives in the Philippines

The FuturArc Forum in the Philippines saw a turnout of 240 participants. These attendees came with one sole purpose in mind—to work towards a more sustainable built environment.

FuturArc Forum 2008 was held on 29 February in the Philippines with experts on green building from around the world calling for action on sustainability. The forum is being held by FuturArc journal's publisher, BCI Asia, in eight cities across Asia Pacific with expected participation by 4,000 architects, engineers and property developers as well as students of these professions.

Dr Deo Prasad, Director of the Sustainable Development Program at the University of New South Wales, started off the forum by sharing on the principles of green building. Following, FuturArc's Chief Editor Dr Nirmal Kishnani, expounded on the greening process, and highlighted five myths of green buildings. Mr Ulf Meyer, an author and lecturer on Progressive Architecture based in West Berlin, Germany then described the latest concepts of environmentally friendly design in contemporary European architecture and urban design, highlighting specific examples from Germany. Next, Mr Amado De Jesus, Founding Chairman of the Philippines Green Architecture Movement and Mr Christopher Dela Cruz, Chairman of the Philippine Green Building Council provided an overview of the Green Building Movement in the Philippines. Mr Emmanuel Samuel, the Sales Development Director for Autodesk Asia-Pacific subsequently elaborated on the use of BIM technology as a means of achieving sustainable design. And concluding the day's presentations was Mr Miguel C. Guerrero, Managing Partner of Asian Architects who provided an outline of green design technologies, categorizing them according to the five ways that an architect approaches a design project. As one of the jurors of the inaugural FuturArc Prize design competition, Dr Nirmal Kishnani described the challenge of designing green buildings as posed by three development sites in Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. From a field of strong entries across the Asia-Pacific region, Indonesia's Mr Willy Rahadian Pranata won the Master Award in the Professional Category for his design of D' Rimbunan at Leisure Farm Resort Residences in Johor, Malaysia. The Master Award in the Student Category went to Mr Prime Tambayong of Singapore for his design of the Australian site.

A dinner was held after the forum to recognize the 10 most active architectural firms in the Philippines. Presenter Biography File

Dr Deo Prasad, PhD is Director of the Sustainable Development Program at the University of New South Wales. He has worked on milestone projects including Australia's solar village, Sydney Olympics, advanced tools for building performance assessments, emerging green building technologies and numerous other projects. He has published in excess of 150 key papers in this field including books such as Designing with Solar Power (EarthScan commissioned by IEA), Energy Efficient Australian Housing (AGPS) and Global Warming and the Built Environment (FPSpon). He has directed the UNSW Centre for Sustainable Built Environments for 12 years. Dr Prasad sits on many boards and committees internationally in this field (Canadian Net Zero Energy Buildings Network, Korean Eco-Peace Leadership Foundation, Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, Shanghai, Special Committee on Urbanisation at UNEP, Bangkok, International Solar Energy Society (Freiburg), Standards Australia Committee on Energy Efficient Buildings and many more). He has won the Australian National Innovation Award and the NSW Government 2004 Green Globe Award as well as the 2006 Royal Australian Institute of Architects National Award for his contribution to the research and design of sustainable buildings. Dr Nirmal Kishnani, PhD is Chief Editor of the FuturArc journal. He is both an educator and practitioner in the area of green buildings, and presently teaches at the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore. He has lectured and written widely on the subject of greening Asia and has been a consultant to projects across the region, most recently as head of a sustainability unit operating from Singapore. Ulf Meyer is a trained architect, prominent author and lecturer in the field of architecture and urban design based in Berlin. He has lectured at universities and cultural centres in Europe, the US and Canada as well as Japan, China and Taiwan. He has published over 700 articles in newspaper and magazines as well as several well-known books on urban design and architecture. Download File
Arch. Amado De Jesus is a member of the College of Fellows of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) and a past President of the UAP-Manila Maharlika Chapter, Hall of Fame Awardee. He is the Philippine representative to the ASEAN Energy Awards and is the Chair of the Board of Judges. He is also the Chair of the Green Building Initiative, a green building rating system. Arch. De Jesus has been invited to many local and international conferences either as participant or as a presenter on various topics such as green architecture, energy efficiency and conservation, healthy buildings and other topics related to sustainable development and design. Arch. Christopher Dela Cruz is a Filipino Architect with over 10 years of experience in the building and construction industry. An advocate of sustainable building, he has actively campaigned for the formation of the Philippine Green Building Council, an alliance of business and industry leaders from both private and public sectors that promotes sustainable practices to the property industry. Emmanuel Samuel is Sales Development Director for Autodesk Asia-Pacific. He is responsible for driving the Architecture Engineering and Construction Business in Asia Pacific. With more than 18 years of experience in the information technology industry, Emmanuel is a passionate evangelist for the transformation of the building in the face of contemporary, enduring challenges such as environmentally friendly/sustainable design, meeting the challenges of increasing urbanization/globalization, and addressing the threat of terrorism and natural disasters. With the building industry traditionally lagging in information technology, Emmanuel's mission encompasses driving the awareness and adoption of Building Information Modeling as a key platform for innovation, competitiveness and productivity in the building industry. Emmanuel holds a Bachelor of Business Management from Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, an MBA from Dubuque University, Iowa and an MSc in Computing from DeMontford Univerisity in the UK. Arch. Miguel Guerrero, graduated from the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture and Fine Arts in 1979. He became a registered architect in 1981 and spent most of his time in private practice. His professional experience spans 32 years, starting out as a working student in 1974, venturing into private practice in 1982 and setting up an architectual partnership called Asian Architects in 1985.
