FuturArc Forum 2008 Opens in Sydney
FuturArc Forum 2008 was held on 28 March in Australia at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre with experts on green building from around the world addressing various topics on sustainability. The forum is organized by BCI Asia and BCI Australia, the joint publisher of the FuturArc journal. Held in eight cities across Asia Pacific, the conferences are expected to be attended by 4,000 architects, engineers and property developers as well as students of these professions.
The forum was declared officially open by New South Wales Government Architect, Peter Mould, and Romilly Madew, the Executive Director of the Green Building Council Australia. Kazuo Iwamura, a Professor for Environment Studies at the Musashi Institute of Technology, Japan, kicked off the day’s presentations by examining the forces behind the global green building movement, and sharing case studies from Japan. Next, Ulf Meyer, an author and lecturer on Progressive Architecture based in Berlin, Germany, explained the latest concepts of environmentally friendly design in contemporary European architecture and urban design. Dr. Deo Prasad, Director of the Sustainable Development Program at the University of New South Wales, then covered the fundamentals of green design, as well as the challenges faced in green building. Following, Emmanuel Samuel, the Sales Development Director of Autodesk Asia-Pacific, highlighted the advantages of Building Information Modeling Technology, and how it could be used as a tool to achieve sustainable design. And rounding up the series of presentations was Ray Brown, the Director of architectus Sydney, who provided some insights on the Bligh Street Project, a sustainable collaboration project with Ingenhoven Architects from Germany. The speakers’ presentations will be made available on the FuturArc website at www.futurarc.com. Participants also had the opportunity to attend discussion sessions with different key industry professionals who touched on the greening process from their own experience. Dr. Matthias Krups, Chairman of the BCI Group, presented a ground-breaking survey of green building markets in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam during one of the sessions.
A FuturArc Prize dinner was also held on 27 March at the Luna Park Crystal Ballroom, prior to the forum. An inaugural green design competition, FuturArc Prize 2008 was held from October 2007 to 15 January 2008, and called for green building designs on one of three real development sites in Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. The competition attracted more than 250 registrations from 15 countries. The Brisbane site design award went to Edy Lim, who walked away with SGD2,000 cash and SGD6,000 worth of design software sponsored by Autodesk. Apart from the prize presentation, David Whitting, the Director of Brookfield Multiplex Limited, also conducted an onstage interview with Edy. The audience then fielded questions to both David and Edy.
The Patron for FuturArc Forum 2008 Australia is Autodesk. The Platinum sponsors are Canon and Geberit; Gold sponsors are Hebel and OCÉ; Silver sponsors are Schott and Zumtobel; and Bronze sponsors include Bevisco Commercial Interiors, Byron Bay Premium Ale, Cavalier Bremworth Carpets and Hi-Light.
The FuturArc Forum will be moving on to its final leg in Hong Kong on 8 April, where keynote speakers from around the world will once again take the stage in calling for action on sustainability. |
