THE CRAFT OF BUILDING A CITY
Organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the festival celebrates the theme of Craft to honour those who have dedicated a lifetime in perfecting their craft in the making of architecture and the built environment where communities can live, work and play.
The 2019 edition this year is curated by Formwerkz Architects, who has designed a bespoke line-up of immersive programmes to experience the role of craft in teh development of modern and liveable cities. These include architectural exhibitions, conferences and forums, film screenings, as well as hands-on artisanal craft workshops.
Through the series of master lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions tours and workshops, the festival seeks to engage the public, design fraternity, agencies and academics alike to explore the understanding of Craft.
Anchoring these showcases is Making Architecture, which allows visitors to step into the shoes of an architect to explore the rigour involved in the production and processes of architecture, and lays bare the thoughtful assembly of materials and components, from the intimate scale of the handmade to the enveloping urban form of cities.
The festival also allows architects and designers to learn from the icons of the industry from around the world. The SIA Conference provides an open forum for conversations on the issues pertinent to the urban environment to take place. The keynote speaker is the esteemed Mr David Nelson, Head of Design and Associate Partner of Foster + Partners.
A veteran architect with more than 40 years under his belt, David has led projects across all scales, ranging from infrastructure to furniture. The creative mind behind several iconic structures around the world, including the awarding winning New German Parliament building in Berlin as well as the new Supreme Court in Singapore, David will speak alongside seven other eminent presenters from Singapore and the region to address the topic related to the theme and sub-themes of the festival.
Architours will be returning to allow visitors to discover architecture as they discover the making of public buildings and gain access to private sanctum of residences. Espousing this year’s theme of craft, the curated list of Architours will take participants around Singapore to learn about how craft is manifested in design and construction of some of Singapore’s own architectural icons. They include the Aperture House (Formwerkz Architects), Camo House (WOW Architects), Design Orchard (WOHA), City Gate (SAA Architects) and many more.
